Work with the Vladimir Stepanov Foundation began in 2021, when, by the photographer’s decision, the archive of the author’s negatives was transferred to the Lumiere Gallery. The opening of the author’s foundation was a natural continuation of the fruitful creative cooperation between the Gallery and the photographer over the past decade.
The large–scale preparatory work of the foundation’s project was carried out jointly with Vladimir Stepanov – hundreds of images were scanned, retouched and systematized for opening the archive to the general public and further research of the author’s art.
The work of Vladimir Stepanov, an author belonging to a new generation of photographers, stands out vividly against the backdrop of staged and often censored plots of Soviet photojournalism of the 1950s. In the works of the master, a new visual canon can be traced – a love for genre scenes and urban color; the desire to capture the free spirit of the “Thaw” era largely determined his shooting presentation and author’s style.
Over the past ten years, we have held several exhibitions with the participation of the author’s works:
2007 – “Photo 60-70”. Lumiere Brothers Gallery (Moscow, Russia)
2010 – “Icons. 1960–1980”. Lumiere Brothers Photography Center (Moscow, Russia)
2010 – “Soviet photographic art of the 60s and 70s”. Lumiere Brothers Photography Center (Moscow, Russia)
2013 – “Moscow Stories”. Part 2. Lumiere Brothers Photography Center (Moscow, Russia)
2018 – “The Soul of Moscow streets”. Lumiere Brothers Photography Center (Moscow, Russia)
2023 – “In the shadow of high-rises”. Lumiere gallery (Moscow, Russia)
Today, the foundation’s website presents 300 works by Vladimir Stepanov. The posted archive of photographs covers the period of the “Thaw” era, 1957-1965, in the work of the author. Sections “Moscow. 1957-1965” and “Prague 1962” are the most complete, in which the author reveals genre stories from the life of cities. Photos of other sections are thematic photo essays dedicated to the life of VGIK, the I Moscow International Film Festival, the artist Alexander Deyneka.
The search for photos on the foundation’s website is carried out in several ways: by section, chronology, title or keyword.
The purpose of creating the website of the Vladimir Stepanov Foundation is to combine on one platform the exhibition works of the author, as well as his unknown frames found by us during research work with the archive, providing access to them to the widest possible audience. The opening of an individual website dedicated to Stepanov’s work was an important milestone in the interaction with the master. Further research work on the archive involves the development and study of the material, the creation of personal exhibition projects, as well as plans to create an author’s monograph in the future.
